When he was born, his parents were worried and sad to see that their son had no arms. His mother, heartbroken, couldn’t even bring herself to feed him for the first seven days. His parents worried about his future and who would take care of him.
But a mother’s love is a powerful force. Seeing her son’s will to live, Gulshan’s mother decided she would not let his disability define his life. She started teaching him how to use his feet as his hands. She would place a piece of chalk between his toes and encourage him to draw lines. It was a slow and difficult process, but little Gulshan never gave up. Soon, he learned to hold a pen with his toes and started writing.
A Hunger for Education Against All Odds
Gulshan’s journey to get an education was filled with obstacles. When he first went to school, other children would make fun of him. This made him very sad, but it also made him more determined to prove them wrong. He worked hard and focused on his studies.
His quest for higher education was even more challenging. To attend college, Gulshan had to travel 74 kilometers every day from his village to Jawaharlal Nehru College in Chakradharpur. The journey was long and tiring, but his spirit was strong. Despite all the difficulties, he completed his postgraduate degree in Political Science and later even earned a B.Ed. degree. He showed everyone that with a strong will, nothing is impossible.
The Teacher Who Teaches from the Heart (and Feet!)
After finishing his education in 2012, Gulshan wanted to become a teacher. He believed that education was the key to a better life, and he wanted to share that gift with the children in his village. It wasn’t easy to find a job, but in 2014, with the help of the local district authorities and the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), he was appointed as a maths teacher in the Upgraded High School in his own village, Baranga.
For the past 11 years, Gulshan Lohar has been a source of inspiration for everyone around him. He stands in front of his class, holding a piece of chalk between his toes, and writes complicated math formulas on the blackboard with perfect clarity. His students look at him with respect and admiration. One of his students, Neha Mahto, said she was amazed when she first saw him teach. “We used to wonder how a teacher with no hands could teach,” she said. “But seeing him write with his feet, we were speechless.”
The principal of the school, Rajiv Shankar Mahto, says that Gulshan is a role model for the students. “He shows the children that you can achieve anything if you are determined. He does all his work himself, from writing on the board to even drinking water. He inspires everyone.”
Another teacher, Sunita Kanth, shares, “In my two years of working with him, I have never felt that he is any less capable than any other teacher. The students are very close to him and love his simple way of teaching.”
A Life of Love, Family, and Hope
Gulshan’s strength also comes from his loving family. In 2017, he married Anjali Soy, and they have a three-year-old daughter. Anjali is his biggest support. She helps him with his daily tasks, like getting ready for school. She says she never feels burdened by this. “It has become a normal part of my life. I don’t see it as a burden,” she says with a smile. Their love story shows that true connection is about understanding and supporting each other, no matter the circumstances.
Gulshan’s work is not easy. He works on a “no work, no pay” basis and earns ₹139 per hour. But for him, teaching is not just a job; it’s a mission. He wants to be a living example for others. “I want people to see me not as someone helpless but as an inspiration,” he says. “I want to show society that disability is not a barrier to achieving your dreams.”
A Social Message of Hope
Gulshan Lohar’s story is a powerful reminder that our limitations are often in our minds. He has not only educated hundreds of children but has also taught them a priceless lesson about life: that with courage, perseverance, and a positive attitude, you can overcome any obstacle. He is not just a math teacher; he is a teacher of life.
