Background: The Allegations
The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. prosecutors are investigating whether Adani Group companies imported Iranian liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) into India through the Mundra port in Gujarat, potentially violating U.S. sanctions against Iran.
The investigation centers on several LPG tankers that allegedly traveled between Iran and Mundra port, exhibiting behaviors commonly associated with sanctions evasion, such as spoofing ship location data.
Adani Group’s Response
The Adani Group has categorically denied the allegations, labeling the reports as “baseless and mischievous.” In a statement, the conglomerate asserted that it has no knowledge of any investigation by U.S. authorities and emphasized its strict compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
The company further stated that it does not handle any cargo from Iran at any of its ports, including shipments originating from Iran or vessels operating under the Iranian flag.
Market Reaction
Following the news, shares of Adani Group companies experienced a decline:
- Adani Enterprises: Dropped by up to 2.63%.
- Adani Ports: Fell by 2.72%.
- Other Group Entities: Adani Total Gas, Adani Green Energy, Adani Energy Solutions, and Adani Power saw declines between 1% and 2%.
The broader market also reacted, with the Nifty 50 index dropping 0.4%, and Adani Enterprises and Adani Ports among the top losers.
Previous Legal Challenges
This scrutiny comes months after U.S. authorities indicted Gautam Adani and his nephew, Sagar Adani, for allegedly orchestrating $250 million in bribes to secure solar power contracts in India. The Adani Group has dismissed those accusations as “baseless” and committed to pursuing all legal remedies.
Implications and Outlook
The ongoing investigations underscore the importance of compliance with international sanctions and regulations. For the Adani Group, these allegations could have significant legal and financial implications, potentially affecting its global operations and investor confidence.
