In recent years, India’s e-commerce landscape has been dominated by a few major players, making it challenging for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to compete. To address this imbalance, the Government of India introduced the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), aiming to create a more inclusive and decentralized digital marketplace.
What is ONDC?
Launched on December 31, 2021, by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), ONDC is a private non-profit organization designed to democratize e-commerce in India. Its primary objectives include:
- Ending monopolies of major platforms.
- Digitizing the value chain.
- Standardizing operations.
- Enhancing inclusivity for SMEs and local businesses.
- Increasing efficiency in logistics.
- Providing consumers with more choices.
- Ensuring data privacy and confidentiality.
- Reducing operational costs.
By leveraging open-source methodologies and standardized protocols, ONDC allows consumers and merchants to transact goods and services independent of any specific platform or application. This approach is reminiscent of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which revolutionized digital payments in India.
Progress and Milestones
ONDC’s journey has been marked by significant milestones:
- April 29, 2022: Pilot phase launched in five cities: New Delhi, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Shillong, and Coimbatore.
- September 30, 2022: Public beta rolled out in Bengaluru Urban district.
- January 10, 2024: First successful international cross-border transaction with Singapore-based Proxtera.
- May 2024: Recorded 5 million retail orders in a single month.
As of October 2024, ONDC has expanded to over 800 cities, with more than 370,000 vendors and service providers onboarded.
Diverse Participation
ONDC has attracted a wide range of participants across various sectors:
- Buyer Apps: Paytm, Mystore, Magicpin, Ola, and others.
- Seller Apps: Snapdeal, Meesho, Mystore, and more.
- Logistics Partners: Ekart, Dunzo, Delhivery, Loadshare.
Notably, Hero MotoCorp joined ONDC to provide products, accessories, and parts for two-wheelers, making ‘Hero Genuine Parts’ available to customers using any buyer app on the network.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
While ONDC has made commendable progress, it faces challenges such as integrating diverse platforms, ensuring data privacy, and maintaining a seamless user experience. However, with continuous collaboration among stakeholders and a commitment to inclusivity, ONDC is poised to reshape India’s e-commerce landscape.
Conclusion
ONDC represents a transformative initiative to democratize e-commerce in India. By fostering a decentralized and inclusive digital marketplace, it offers SMEs and local businesses an opportunity to thrive in the digital economy. As ONDC continues to evolve, it holds the promise of a more equitable and efficient e-commerce ecosystem for all.
