In late May 2025, Sharmistha Panoli, a 22-year-old law student from Pune and social media influencer, found herself at the center of a national controversy. Known for her candid commentary on current affairs, Panoli posted a video on Instagram criticizing Bollywood celebrities for their silence on ‘Operation Sindoor’—a military operation launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. In the video, she allegedly used derogatory language about a religious community and the Prophet Muhammad. Despite deleting the video and issuing an unconditional apology, the content had already gone viral, leading to multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) being filed against her.
Kolkata Police arrested Panoli in Gurugram, Haryana, after she reportedly failed to respond to multiple summons. She was then brought to Kolkata and remanded to 14-day judicial custody.
The arrest ignited a political firestorm. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal of “selective enforcement” and “appeasement politics.” BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticized the arrest, suggesting that action is only taken against certain communities. He stated, “The action is only taken against Sanatanis. Everyone here has a licence to abuse Sanatana… This is appeasement politics. A certain community is their vote bank and this is for appeasement.”
Support for Panoli extended beyond political lines. Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut condemned the arrest, stating that while Panoli’s comments were “unpleasant,” they did not warrant such severe legal consequences. Ranaut emphasized the importance of free speech and cautioned against turning West Bengal into “another North Korea.”
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and actor Pawan Kalyan also weighed in, stating, “Blasphemy must be condemned, always! Secularism isn’t a shield for some and a sword for others. It must be a two-way street. West Bengal Police, the nation is watching. Act justly for all.”
International voices also weighed in. Dutch politician Geert Wilders, known for his right-wing views, expressed support for Panoli, urging authorities not to penalize her for “speaking the truth.”
The incident has sparked widespread debate on the balance between freedom of expression and communal sensitivity in India. While some view Panoli’s arrest as a necessary step to maintain communal harmony, others see it as an overreach that threatens individual liberties.
