In a significant move in the global fight against terrorism, the United States has officially designated The Resistance Front (TRF) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). This declaration comes in the wake of the tragic Pahalgam terrorist attack in April 2025, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, marking it as the most lethal assault on civilians in India since the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. 

The U.S. State Department has explicitly identified the TRF as a “front and proxy” for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a notorious terrorist group with a long history of violence in the region. This designation is a major victory for Indian diplomacy and reinforces the strong counter-terrorism partnership between India and the United States.

The Backstory: Who is The Resistance Front?

The Resistance Front emerged in the aftermath of the 2019 abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. Security officials believe the group was formed as a tactic to evade international sanctions that have been imposed on Pakistan for its alleged support of terrorist organizations. By operating under a new name, the perpetrators of violence sought to create a smokescreen, but this designation by the U.S. has now lifted that veil.

• Financial Sanctions: It is now a crime for any U.S. person to provide material support or resources to the TRF. All property and interests in property of the TRF that are in the U.S. or in the possession or control of U.S. persons are frozen.
• Travel Bans: Members of the TRF and their supporters may be denied visas and entry into the United States.
• International Cooperation: This designation will make it easier for India to pursue transnational legal action against the TRF and its members. It also strengthens the case for listing the TRF under the UN Security Council’s 1267 Committee for sanctions.
