In a major counter-espionage operation, Indian security agencies have neutralized a dangerous, Pakistan-backed terror module that was in the advanced stages of executing a plan to spy on the Indian Army’s movements using a network of solar-powered cameras. The conspiracy, which has been described as a potential precursor to a ‘Pulwama 2.0’ style attack, was thwarted with the arrest of six individuals in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, sending shockwaves through the security establishment.
The arrested individuals have revealed a sinister plot to install over 50 solar-powered CCTV cameras at strategic locations, primarily near railway stations and tracks, to monitor the movement of army personnel and equipment in real-time. This elaborate espionage network was allegedly being orchestrated by handlers from across the border, with the Pakistani intelligence agency, ISI, being the prime suspect.
A Backstory of Deception: Unraveling the Conspiracy
The lid was blown off this operation when intelligence agencies began tracking a group of individuals who were suspiciously sharing photos, videos, and GPS coordinates of sensitive locations with foreign numbers. This led them to a woman, identified as Iram, who was tasked with recruiting young people for the network. Following her trail, the agencies apprehended six people, including Suhail Malik, the alleged key handler, and four others who had even traveled to Pulwama after the 2019 attack, indicating the depth and long-term nature of this conspiracy.
The interrogation of the accused has revealed some startling details. They had already installed solar-powered cameras at the Delhi Cantonment and Sonipat railway stations, with plans to expand their network to Ambala and other locations along the crucial Delhi-Jammu route. The choice of solar-powered cameras was a calculated one, as they could operate for extended periods without the need for maintenance or battery changes, making them ideal for covert surveillance in remote areas.
The Human Element: Exploiting Vulnerability
A particularly concerning aspect of this case is the modus operandi of the terror module, which involved recruiting individuals by exploiting their vulnerabilities. One of the arrested accused, a woman named ‘Mehak,’ was reportedly instrumental in honey-trapping and luring people into the network. This highlights the multifaceted approach of our adversaries, who are now using a combination of technology and psychological manipulation to achieve their nefarious goals.
The financial transactions were also cleverly disguised to avoid a trail. Payments for the assigned tasks, ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 15,000, were routed through UPI but collected as cash from Jan Seva Kendras and local shops. This made it incredibly difficult to track the flow of money and identify the masterminds behind the operation.
Connecting the Dots: A Pattern of Aggression
This foiled plot cannot be viewed in isolation. It is part of a larger, ongoing campaign by Pakistan-based terror outfits to destabilize India. The fact that the accused had sent sensitive information to numbers in Malaysia and the United Kingdom, in addition to a Saudi Arabian handler, points to a global network of terror financing and coordination.
The memories of the 2019 Pulwama attack, in which 40 of our brave CRPF personnel were martyred, are still fresh in our minds. The current plot, with its focus on monitoring army movements, strongly suggests that the perpetrators were planning a similar large-scale attack. By neutralizing this network, our security agencies have undoubtedly averted a major national tragedy.
A Message to the Nation: The Power of Unity
In these challenging times, it is more important than ever for us to stand united as a nation. We must be the eyes and ears of our security forces and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that no anti-national element can succeed in its mission to harm our country. We salute the brave men and women of our security and intelligence agencies who work tirelessly, often in the shadows, to keep us safe. Their dedication and professionalism are the bedrock of our national security.
