The Silent Theft: How The AEPS Scam Works
Imagine you are sitting at home and your phone is resting on the table. You have not received any phone calls. No suspicious links have been clicked. Your bank account is safe in your pocket. Suddenly a message flashes on your screen. A massive amount of money has been debited from your account. You stare at the screen in disbelief. How is this possible when you did not share any OTP or PIN with anyone. This is the new reality of the AEPS scam.
The Backstory Of Financial Inclusion
The Aadhaar Enabled Payment System was designed with a noble intention. The goal was to help millions of people in Rural India who did not have access to ATM cards or Smartphones. The system allows anyone to withdraw cash or check their balance just by using their Aadhaar number and their Fingerprint. It was a breakthrough for Financial Inclusion. However, every technological advancement brings a new shadow of risk. That convenience has now become a massive Cybersecurity loophole that criminals are exploiting right now.
How The Scam Happens
This fraud does not require your permission or your phone. The Cyber Criminals operate on a very simple and dangerous premise. They obtain your Aadhaar data through various leaks. Once they have your details, they create a Fake KYC profile. The most disturbing part is the Biometric Cloning. They use Silicone Molds to create a fake version of your fingerprint. They walk into a local Banking Correspondent shop and use the fake finger on an AEPS machine. The machine thinks it is you. The transaction is verified, and your money is gone.
Why You Are At Risk
You might think that because you are tech-savvy, you are safe. This is not entirely true. The biggest targets are the most vulnerable. This includes Pensioners, MGNREGA Workers, and Jan Dhan Account Holders. These individuals often have low Cyber Awareness. They do not keep a check on their SMS alerts. Sometimes they do not even know that their money has been stolen until it is too late. The tragedy is that while you can change a Password or a PIN, you cannot change your Fingerprint. Your Biometric data is yours for life. If it is compromised, the risk remains constant.
How To Protect Yourself
The first and most important step is to Lock Your Biometrics. You can do this easily through the UIDAI website or the mAadhaar App. This ensures that even if someone has your Aadhaar number and your cloned fingerprint, they cannot complete a transaction. Only unlock it when you absolutely need to use it. Stay away from unknown Biometric devices. Monitor your SMS alerts closely. If you see even a small, suspicious debit, act immediately. Call the Cyber Helpline number 1930 and report the incident. Time is the most critical factor here.
A Message For Our Community
We live in an era of rapid digital growth. We must embrace this change, but we must also be the guardians of our own safety. Please look out for your elders. Teach your parents and grandparents about these risks. A simple conversation at the dinner table can save them from losing their hard earned savings. Be empathetic to those who are less familiar with technology. Help them secure their accounts. Let us build a safer Digital India together.
