A Humble Beginning
Born on May 31, 1725, in the village of Chondi, Maharashtra, Ahilyabai Holkar emerged from modest beginnings to become one of India’s most revered queens. Her father, Mankoji Shinde, recognized her intellect early and ensured she received an education—a rarity for girls at the time. At the age of eight, she married Khanderao Holkar, the son of Malhar Rao Holkar, a prominent noble in the Maratha Empire.
Tragedy struck early in her life with the deaths of her husband, father-in-law, and son. Undeterred, Ahilyabai took the reins of the Holkar dynasty in 1767, becoming the ruler of Indore.
A Just and Visionary Ruler
Ahilyabai’s 28-year reign is remembered for its fairness, prosperity, and inclusivity. She held daily public audiences to address her subjects’ concerns, ensuring justice prevailed. Her commitment to impartiality was so profound that she once sentenced her own son to death for a grave offense, demonstrating that the law stood above all.
She abolished regressive laws, such as the confiscation of property from childless widows, and promoted education and welfare for all.
The Greatest Devotee of Lord Shiva
Ahilyabai Holkar was renowned as the greatest devotee of Lord Shiva. Her unwavering devotion was evident in her daily life and governance. She dedicated her kingdom to Lord Shiva, often signing royal proclamations with “Shri Shankara” alongside her signature. This spiritual commitment earned her the honorific title “Punyashlok,” meaning “one whose name is sacred.”
Her devotion inspired her to rebuild and renovate numerous temples across India, including the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, the Somnath Temple in Gujarat, and the Aundha Nagnath Temple in Maharashtra. She also constructed dharamshalas (rest houses), wells, and ghats to facilitate pilgrimages and promote communal harmony.
Honoring Her Legacy Through Art
Ahilyabai’s life and contributions have been immortalized through various artistic expressions. In 2017, former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan penned a Hindi play titled “Matoshree,” dramatizing Ahilyabai’s life. Additionally, the television series “Punyashlok Ahilyabai,” which aired from 2021 to 2023, brought her story to a broader audience, highlighting her role as a just ruler and devout follower of Lord Shiva.
Enduring Legacy
Ahilyabai Holkar’s legacy transcends time. Her name adorns institutions like the Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport in Indore, reflecting her lasting impact on the region. The Maheshwari sarees she championed continue to be celebrated for their craftsmanship.
In recent times, her contributions have been recognized anew. The Uttar Pradesh government announced the naming of a medical college in Auraiya after her, acknowledging her role in social welfare and good governance.
Celebrating Her 300th Birth Anniversary
In 2025, the nation commemorates the 300th birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar with events across various states. In Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav highlighted her legacy by inaugurating development projects and emphasizing women’s empowerment.
In Nagpur, Union Minister Annapurna Devi lauded “Operation Sindoor” as a testament to women’s leadership, drawing parallels to Ahilyabai’s visionary reforms.
Cultural programs in Lucknow featured dance dramas and recitals, celebrating her life and contributions.
